A percentage calculator is a simple tool that helps you calculate percentages quickly and accurately. You can use it to find a percentage of a number, calculate percentage changes, or work out discounts.

For example, you can use a percentage calculator to find 20% of 150, calculate the percentage increase from 50 to 75, or find the final price after a 30% discount.

A percentage is a way of expressing a number as a part of 100.

The word percent means “per hundred.”

        For example:

        • 10% means 10 out of 100
        • 25% means 25 out of 100
        • 50% means 50 out of 100
        • 75% means 75 out of 100
        • 100% means the whole amount

Percentages are commonly used in shopping discounts, exams, statistics, finance, business, and everyday calculations.

        The basic percentage formula is:

        Percentage = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100

For example, if you scored 45 marks out of 60:

        (45 ÷ 60) × 100 = 75%

        So, your score is 75%.

To find a percentage of a number, use:

        Percentage Value = (Percentage ÷ 100) × Number

For example, to find 15% of 200:

        (15 ÷ 100) × 200 = 30

        Therefore, 15% of 200 is 30.

Sometimes you know two numbers and want to find what percentage one number is of another.

        Use:

        Percentage = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100

For example, 40 is what percentage of 200?

        (40 ÷ 200) × 100 = 20%

        Therefore, 40 is 20% of 200.

Percentage increase shows how much a value has increased compared with its original value.

        The formula is:

Percentage Increase = ((New Value − Original Value) ÷ Original Value) × 100

For example, if a price increases from 80 to 100:

        ((100 − 80) ÷ 80) × 100 = 25%

        The value increased by 25%.

Percentage decrease shows how much a value has decreased compared with its original value.

        The formula is:

Percentage Decrease = ((Original Value − New Value) ÷ Original Value) × 100

For example, if a price decreases from 100 to 80:

        ((100 − 80) ÷ 100) × 100 = 20%

        The value decreased by 20%.

Percentage discounts are commonly used when shopping.

        To calculate the discount amount:

Discount Amount = Original Price × Discount Percentage ÷ 100

For example, if an item costs 500 and has a 30% discount:

        500 × 30 ÷ 100 = 150

        The discount is 150.

        To find the final price:

Final Price = Original Price − Discount Amount

        500 − 150 = 350

So, the final price is 350.

Here are some of the most commonly used percentage formulas.

        Percentage Value = (Percentage ÷ 100) × Number

        Example:

        20% of 250 = 50

        Percentage = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100

        Example:

30 is what percentage of 150?

        (30 ÷ 150) × 100 = 20%

Percentage Change = ((New Value − Original Value) ÷ Original Value) × 100

This can be used to calculate either a percentage increase or decrease.

Discount Amount = Original Price × Discount Percentage ÷ 100

Final Price = Original Price − Discount Amount

        Example 1: What Is 15% of 200?

First convert 15% into a decimal:

        15 ÷ 100 = 0.15

        Then multiply by 200:

        0.15 × 200 = 30

        Answer: 30

        Use the percentage formula:

        (40 ÷ 200) × 100 = 20%

        Answer: 20%

        Example 3: A Value Increases From 80 to 100

        First find the difference:

        100 − 80 = 20

Then divide by the original value:

        20 ÷ 80 = 0.25

        Multiply by 100:

        0.25 × 100 = 25%

        Answer: 25% increase

        Example 4: A 30% Discount on 500

        Calculate the discount:

        500 × 30 ÷ 100 = 150

        Then subtract the discount:

        500 − 150 = 350

        Answer: 350 final price
